Alaina A. – "Compassionate"
Alaina is a nurse for Interim HealthCare Hospice in the Upstate. Her compassion for others in the final stages of life and desire to make every day special has touched the hearts of many patients and families.
Inspired by her father, a police officer and firefighter, as well as her godmother and aunt who were both nurses, Alaina knew as a child, she wanted to help others too. They were all instrumental in her decision to pursue nursing. While in nursing school, Alaina’s father was diagnosed with cancer and was later admitted to hospice before he passed. During this difficult time, she walked the road of a family member and a caregiver, which prepared her for the road she would later walk as a hospice nurse.
For the first 10 years of her career, Alaina worked as an ER nurse at a local hospital. The ability to think on her feet and save a life was very rewarding, but the long hours made it difficult to balance the needs of her family and home life. She began to inquire with friends working on the home health side of nursing which led her to Interim HealthCare. After her own family experiences, Alaina knew hospice was her calling. In July 2019, she joined Interim HealthCare in the Upstate as an RN Case Manager caring for hospice patients in their homes. When COVID-19 hit, Alaina worked 24/7 as a COVID-19 nurse for about six weeks, caring for patients in their homes and in facilities. She later transitioned to her current role as a Hospice Facility Nurse.
Working in hospice, Alaina is able to care for patients and their families on many different levels. In addition to their physical needs, she cares for them emotionally and spiritually as well, which is an integral part of Interim HealthCare’s HomeLife Enrichment® standard of care. “It’s not just medicine, it’s touch, it’s aromatherapy, it’s music, it’s sitting outside on a windy day flying a kite. It’s little things that mean the world to them and Interim HealthCare gives us the opportunity to support those patients and what means the most to them,” said Alaina.
The most rewarding part of her job has the been the autonomy it offers, along with the leadership and support she receives. No matter what is needed, their management team is only a phone call away. Moreover, Alaina has the autonomy to be the nurse she was trained to be and care for her patients on her own, which is very fulfilling. The support system is strong. You are known and you are heard, and that’s important to her.
On one occasion, their physicians provided stuffed puppy dogs and baby dolls for the nurses to give out to memory care patients who once had pets or had returned to a mothering role. The joy and comfort that these gifts of love brought them was beyond words—and Alaina got to be a part of it. These are the experiences that make working as an Interim HealthCare Hospice nurse so amazing.
When a patient is approaching their final months of life, it’s hard on everyone, but Alaina does her best to make each person’s day a little bit brighter. In every way, she is made for this!
